Tears of Joy: A Student's Heartfelt Thank You

A deserving student sat down to put into words her appreciation for her scholarship. The following is her poignant letter:

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Deutsch,

My name is Christina Doerner and I am one of the very lucky recipients of your scholarship. I am incredibly grateful that you are willing to donate such a generous award to someone you have never met. I will tell you a little bit about myself in order for you to know what an impact your generosity has made on me.

“I actually broke down in tears because it made me realize that a complete stranger was putting their faith and investment in someone they had never met.”

I was raised in a rather rough neighborhood in Hanover Park, Illinois. My parents divorced when I was young, and my mother eventually got remarried. So I have two biological brothers and two step-brothers, all of whom I love very dearly. All of them together make up my biggest support system. Although none of my family members attended college, they all worked rigorous blue-collar jobs in order to provide for the family. While there is immense value in blue-collar work, my brothers and my parents always pushed me harder because they knew that my ambition and potential reached far beyond what is offered in the job fields that do not require a degree. Upon learning that I received my associate's degree and was headed to NIU to obtain a bachelor's degree, they were all ecstatic. My parents, my brothers, their spouses and children all came out to my graduation to cheer me on. I'm extremely close with everyone in my family so that moment of pride wasn't just for me; it was for them as well.

Although my family has provided great emotional support, they were unable to help me financially. As an independent and determined individual, I tried my best to find my own way to afford my education. Once I understood the true cost of attending NIU, I became quite concerned with how I would exactly afford my education independently. But after fighting through difficult circumstances, I was not about to give up. When I received the news that I would be awarded your generous gift, I was elated! I actually broke down in tears because it made me realize that a complete stranger was putting their faith and investment in someone they had never met. Your kindness is certainly not lost on me and words cannot begin to express what an honor it is to receive this award.

“I hope that someday I will be in a position to offer someone in need the opportunity to find success in life the same way that you have done this for me.”

Your scholarship has not only helped me cover my tuition, but it also helped ensure that I had all the appropriate tools necessary for success in the OM&IS program. Since starting my OM&IS classes, I can say with full confidence, I have found my niche! After graduation, I intend to find a career in either the field of government or environmental industries. I hope to make a positive impact in the world we live in and become a valuable member of modern society.

Your gift has helped convince me that I can accomplish this goal. I have never received a scholarship before and honestly, there is no way I can truly thank you enough. I hope that someday I will be in a position to offer someone in need the opportunity to find success in life the same way that you have done this for me. Without your help, I would not be able to dedicate as much time to my studies. I wholeheartedly thank you for your incredible kindness. Thank you for believing in a stranger. I won't let you down.

Sincerely,
Christina Doerner
